In an effort to further address the needs of Puerto Rico’s casino industry, the Scholarship Foundation is now offering scholarship assistance for specific casino seminars and casino on-line classes from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
A three day Marketing & Customer Service seminar was held at La Concha Resort and conducted by UNLV instructor Rich Lehman who has over 30 years experience in casino operations and management. The seminar was sponsored by José Santiago, Inc. and was attended by 41 casino employees from all over the island. Reaction was very positive and one group returned to their casino to redesign their own marketing plan based on what they learned at the seminar.

A three day Slot Operations seminar was conducted by Dr. Anthony F. Lucas, an Associate Professor at UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration from November 14-16, 2011 at the San Juan Marriott Hotel & Stellaris Casino, our host hotel. Dr. Lucas has done extensive research and has published over 20 gaming articles and two widely used textbooks. The seminar was sponsored by the gaming division of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Once again the seminar was completely full and very well received by the group.
A three day Security & Surveillance Seminar will be conducted by Alan Zajic and Darren Hoke at the Conrad Condado Plaza Hotel. Alan Zajic has over 30 years of practical hands on experience in security and surveillance operations and is an independent security consultant as well as an instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno in the Gaming Management Program. Darren Hoke has over 20 years of gaming experience and is currently director of surveillance at L’Auberge du Lac Hotel & Casino in Louisiana and is a regular instructor with the University of Nevada, Reno Gaming Management Program. Sylvia Vila is receiving reservations for the seminar and can be contacted at svila@sjcourtyard.com
From September 26th to November 18th, a group of ten casino employees enrolled in various classes such as Introduction to Casino Management, Casino Marketing, Professional Security Surveillance Standards, and Casino Auditing. The classes were challenging but the group was up to the task and were pleased with the results. We hope to offer another semester of on-line casino classes this spring.
