Well known political-economic analyst, Dr. Fareed Zakaria, presented a series of conferences in Puerto Rico which benefited the Scholarship Foundation. Invited by the Center for the New Economy and hosted by La Concha Resort, the conferences held on April 18th and 19th were very well attended and thanks to the generosity of various corporations in Puerto Rico, the Scholarship Foundation received a $50,000 donation from the event.
The 8th Annual “12 Chefs…6 Wines..1 Dinner, Eco Dining” was held at the Caribe Hilton Ballroom on May 23rd. Twelve outstanding chefs including Mario Ferro, David Chaymol, Peter Schintler, Dirk Troop, Ariel Rodríguez, Jannette Berrios, Rocio Varela, Augusto Schreiner, Efrain Cruz, Daniel Vasse, Juan Peña and Miguel Santiago enthusiastically prepared 12 delicious dishes based on the harvest in Puerto Rico. Ballester Hermanos donated interesting wines to pair with the creative cuisine of our chefs; the Puerto Rico Philharmonic Orchestra delighted with their wide variety of music and Arquetipo was responsible for the beautiful décor. Once again American Airlines led the Benefit Silent Auction with their donation of two round-trip business class tickets to any destination in Europe where they fly except Italy. It was a lovely evening and a great tradition for our culinary arts scholarship recipients.
The 18th Annual Luis Torregrosa Inter-Casino Golf Tournament took place on Monday, June 13th at the Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort with nearly 200 golfers competing for the various trophies. After a morning of golfing, the golfers and tournament sponsors enjoyed lunch and the awards ceremony. Everyone looked forward to the annual raffle featuring donations of hotel stays, wines, restaurant gift certificates, golf equipment and other great prizes from industry suppliers. AON Risk Services of Puerto Rico were the Title Sponsors and present at the tournament were Carlos Guardia and Lic. Raymond Burgos. They, together with Organizing Committee Chairman Carl Kortum and tournament founder Luis Torregrosa, presented a $100,000 check to the Scholarship Foundation. This was the fourth year that the Luis Torregrosa Inter-Casino Golf Tournament raised $100,000 for our scholarship program.
We are most grateful to all who participated and supported these three major fund raising events in 2011. Without your help, we could not continue our program of granting scholarships to talented students from Puerto Rico seeking professional degrees in the hospitality industry. THANK YOU!
